National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Regional Facilities Closures

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has announced plans to close its regional archives facilities in Chicago and San Francisco in the coming years, relocating their collections to other NARA locations. These facilities preserve historically significant federal records documenting the histories of communities, organizations, and individuals, including materials of particular importance to researchers, educators, genealogists, and Tribal Nations.

NARA has begun identifying relocation destinations and timelines for specific collections, with some records becoming temporarily unavailable beginning October 13, 2026. While reference services at both facilities will continue for now, the planned closures raise broader concerns about the long-term accessibility of these records, particularly for communities and researchers who rely on regional access to historical materials.

The Michigan Archival Association encourages members to stay informed about these developments and their potential impact on access to our nation's documentary heritage.
