Michigan Archival Association Code of Conduct
Adopted by the Membership at the June 2021 MAA Annual Meeting
The Michigan Archival Association (MAA) does not tolerate harassment in any form. MAA is committed to providing a safe, productive, and welcoming environment for all MAA members and representatives at any MAA-sponsored or co-sponsored event or activity, and in online venues such as discussion lists or social media platforms.
Conduct Expectations
All participants are expected to understand and follow the MAA Code of Conduct and to report any violations to MAA leadership. Participants include MAA members, attendees, speakers, volunteers, or anyone interacting in an MAA-sponsored online environment. Speakers are asked to frame discussions as openly and inclusively as possible, and to be aware of how language or images may be perceived by others. Exhibitors in the exhibit hall, sponsor or vendor booths, or at related activities, as well as advertisers in MAA print or online media, are also subject to the Code. Responsible Alcohol and Marijuana Use At many MAA networking events, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are served. MAA expects participants at our events to drink responsibly. Additionally, recreational use of marijuana is legal in the state of Michigan for ages 21 and up as of 2018. MAA and conference host event staff have the right to deny service to participants and may require a participant to leave an event for excessive drinking or inappropriate behavior related to intoxication.
Definition of Harassment
Harassment is any verbal, non-verbal, or physical contact that threatens, intimidates, silences, or coerces another person or group, or produces an unsafe environment. The following types of harassment are prohibited and may include, but are not limited to: abusive or derogatory verbal comments, slurs, epithets, and/or discriminatory images in public and online spaces; threats or acts of violence; intimidation or stalking; harassing photography or recording; purposeful or repeated acts of misgendering; sustained verbal and physical disruption of talks or other events; and/or inappropriate physical contact and unwelcome sexual attention.
Harassment includes offensive verbal comments or non-verbal expressions related to gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, family or relationship status, individual lifestyle, national origin, veteran status, race, age, beliefs, sexual or discriminatory images in public spaces (including online), deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and/or unwelcome sexual attention.
Reporting
For the Michigan Archival Association's Annual Conference: If you are being harassed or witness a concerning incident (no matter how small), please contact MAA representatives, the presiding panel chair, or venue staff immediately. If you are experiencing or witness immediate danger in violation of the Code of Conduct, contact local law enforcement by calling 911 and immediately notify venue security. Conference materials will include contact information for at least two MAA board representatives.
Living Document
The MAA Code of Conduct is intended to be a living document, subject to regular review, and not comprehensive. When the Code does not address a specific issue, the spirit of the Code will provide general guidance until it can be updated.
